Q: Since research is S/U, can a student take an additional course for S/U credit?
A: Students may take one course with the S/U option in each of the fall, spring and summer terms. For students doing research, this will, usually, meet the limit. If, however, a student takes one credit of research, he/she can take a 3 credit class for S/U credit and vice-versa. This policy is detailed in the undergraduate handbook on-line at http://www.jhu.edu/~advising/academic_manual/grades.html#su. Return To Top
Q: Can students register for research in another department (i.e. Biology), receive a grade, and apply it to their Neuroscience major if the research is neuroscience related.
A: No. Students must complete 6 credits of neuroscience research to fulfill their major requirements. This research must be registered under an 080 neuroscience research course number and must be graded on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory scale. In the event a professor gives a letter grade for an 080 research course number, it is automatically converted to S/U by the Office of the Registrar. Any exceptions to this policy must be approved by our Director of Undergraduate Studies, Stewart Hendry. Return To Top
Q: Can students, who have completed their 6 credits of required research with S/U credit, register for 080 research credit for a grade.
A. No. All experiential learning courses for the Neuroscience Program are graded on a S/U credit scale. (Note: This does not apply to BA/MS students conducting Mentored Research for the masters program.) Return To Top
Q: What is considered a passing course grade for my major?
A: A passing grade for the major is considered anything including or above "C-". Students below this grade will need to repeat the course in question. Return To Top
Q: What is the required GPA?
A: The University and the Program require a major and overall cumulative GPA of 2.0. Return To Top
Medical Tutorial Related
Q: Can students take research and the Medical Tutorial in the same term?
A: The Dean's Office has set the policy that students may take up to 3 credits of experiential learning courses in a given term. This includes research, independent study, internship and medical tutorial. Adriene Breckenridge in the Office of Academic Advising informs me that students are highly discouraged from trying to take both the medical tutorial and research in the same term. The tutorial is worth two credits. Students can register for one credit of research. However, a cap is placed on their registration. Should a student complete more than one credit of research and the tutorial for 2 credits, the additional credits will not be granted. Return To Top
Q: When can students register for the Medical Tutorial?
A: According to the Office of Pre-Professional Advising, students may take the tutorial after their freshmen year. Return To Top
