General University Requirements

In addition to the specific degree requirements, students in the Neuroscience B.A. program must, of course, fulfill other Arst and Sciences Division requirements for graduation. The relevant requirements are:

  1. The University distribution requirement of 30 credits in courses designated H, S, Q, or E, at least 18 credits of which must be H or S credits; and
  2. The writing requirement of 4 writing-intensive (W) courses.

All courses required for the Neuroscience major should be taken at Johns Hopkins. Although students are discouraged from taking required courses at other universities, credit toward major requirements may be given for such courses under some circumstances, if the courses are comparable in content and level to the corresponding Hopkins courses. A student who wishes to count a course from another university toward a Neuroscience major requirement must gain approval, prior to taking the course, from the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Neuroscience Program. Prior approval forms are available from the Office of the Registrar or from the Office of Academic Advising. Completed forms should be submitted to the Registrar. After completing an approved course, the student should have an official transcript sent to the Hopkins Registrar. Students are advised that graduate schools and medical schools may look with disfavor on the practice of substituting for a potentially less-demanding course from another university.

Due to the interdepartmental nature of the Neuroscience Program, neuroscience majors are not allowed to complete a second major in a natural sciences area, psychology, cognitive science, biology, or other science disciplines related to neuroscience. Neuroscience students must have the prior approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies to complete a second major. Please consult the relevant university publications for details regarding other university requirements.
